Entrevista: Joe D. Foster

Ola ! Depois de quase dois anos resolvi reativar o meu blog ou tosco-blog como gosto de chama-lo carinhosamente. Tentarei sempre que possivel postar alguma coisa  que seja relevante e que possa acrescentar algo.
Para comecar essa nova fase do blog tem essa entrevista que fiz com o grande Joe D. Foster, guitarrista que tocou no lendario Unity, foi da formacao classica do Ignite, Killing Flame e Speak 714. Atualmente o cara e um renomado fotografo de surf e tambem esta com uma nova banda chamada Blood Days.
Antes peco desculpas por algum eventual erro de traducao, no final segue a entrevista original em ingles.(Original interview in English at the end).

  Olá Joe , em primeiro lugar e uma honra ter essa conversa com o cara que fez parte de bandas que foram muito influentes na minha vida.

Para comecar eu gostaria de saber por que você se afastou um pouco  da música depois de sua passagem pelo  Killing Flame e passou a se dedicar mais à fotografia.

Eu e o Joe Nelson sempre quizemos ter uma banda por isso foi fácil o  comeco, eu acho que realmente não poderia abraçar algumas das letras anti cristas e também ainda não estava pronto para uma turnê e ao mesmo tempo me apaixonei por fotografar surf e que e minha paixão desde então. Duas coisas que sempre se manteve fiel ao meu coração e eu tento fazê-las com 100% de paixão e integridade. Eu tenho certeza que acertamos 100% para uma coisa. Agora é hora de escrever talvez minhas ultimas gravacoes e  ver tantos amigos que tenho ao redor do mundo que sempre foram tão favoráveis a mim.

 Parece que você esta com uma nova banda chamada Blood Days, correto? Fale um pouco desse projeto e o que e esta em uma banda novamente

Eu nunca parei de tocar , eu toco todos os dias na minha casa. Eu sempre quis fazer uma banda de hardcore mais melódico com o meu melhor amigo do  colégio, John Mastropaolo , o baixista original do Unity  e que aparece no primeiro sete polegadas. Ele é o segundo guitarrista agora no Blood Days e escreve realmente grandes partes. temos uma conexão como eu costumava ter com Brett no Ignite e isso é difícil de encontrar, então eu estou feliz  e escrevendo grandes cancoes.

Como você vê a cena hardcore hoje em dia, você ouve bandas novas ? Destaca alguma em particular?

hmmm, todos eles têm nomes muito longos, mas eu acho que isso é legal, eu ainda gosto de coisas antigas, tenho ouvido muito Tempelton Pek (Banda Inglesa de punk melodico)  e acho que eles são ótimos. Não tenho certeza sobre todas essas roupas apertadas e maquiagem etc, mas parece que as bandas novas são melhores com seus instrumentos. Eu ainda acho que  “Artist and Ambulance “do Thrice é um dos melhores exemplos.

Eu sempre tive uma curiosidade sobre o Ignite ... quando “Past our Means” foi lançado, na época a banda era uma das principais no momento e de repente houve essa separação , você e o Casey Jones sairam  e apartir desse momento o Ignite segue outro caminho. Qual sua  visão do Ignite hoje e sua relação com os outros membros da banda.

Casey saiu por motivos pessoais, então eu não quero entrar nisso. Eu deixei porque estava tão cansado de tocar ano após ano as mesmas canções. Eu amo as musicas que escrevi e infelizmente nao chegavamos a um acordo com alguns membros para escrever novas musicas.... Isso só me fez desistir. Eu quero tocar cada música com paixão e não como um robô em turnê.

Eu acho que o Casey ainda fala com eles e eu converso com o Zoli e o Brett às vezes. Eu mesmo tiro as  fotos do Nations Afire  para o Brett , tudo esta bem. Tenho Saudades daqueles caras e para ser honesto, os primeiros 5 anos com o Ignite foram os tempos mais divertido na minha vida.

O Ignite está completando 20 anos , e está prestes a iniciar uma turnê européia . Eu lembro que você disse que vai participar , como isso vai acontecer ? Outros membros também participam ? Casey Jones, Joe Nelson, Randy Johnson ...

Sim, eu acho que Brett teve uma idéia de nos levar, mas eu nunca ouvi falar sobre isso até que eu estava na Áustria e meu amigo Sven me falou sobre isso. Eu estou indo em um trem amanhã e vou estar no show de Leipzig e esperamos tocar algumas músicas. A banda não tem idéia de que estou indo  por isso vamos ver o que acontece. Também vamos ver a banda nova do Dan O`Mahony Done Dying em Berlim. done dying , Vai ser divertido.

 Agora fale  um pouco sobre a Speak 714 e o Killing Flame que eram bandas fantásticas e que não tiverao o destaque que merecia. Fale como era tocar em ambas as bandas.

"the knee deep in guilt" (Primeiro do Speak) supostamente  seria o próximo álbum do Ignite, mas eu e Dan  sempre quisemos fazer uma banda juntos e eu sempre quis ouvir a musica do Ignite  com vocais estilo costa leste.  Isso aconteceu quase logo depois que eu sai do Ignite e não estava pronto para uma turnê, então eu realmente nunca fiz um show com o Speak, acabei so escrevendo o álbum.

O Killing Flame eu acho que  não senti uma conexão com a banda. Realmente não tocou meu coração, então não havia razão para continuar. Gostei de escrever os poucos álbuns com eles e tocar alguns shows, mas meu coração não estava nele o suficiente.

                                        

E sobre o Unity , será que vamos ser capazes de ver uma reuniao da banda ? Você aceitaria se houvesse uma proposta ?

Na verdade eu tenho falado bastante do Unity ultimamente mas não há nenhuma chance,o  Pat  nunca vai cantar de novo, mas o conceito e a mensagem é tão bom que eu gostaria de talvez fazer uma banda tipo o Unity. Junto com o segundo guitarrista o Blood Days tem na sua formacao dois membros originais do Unity e acho que isso e o mais proximo que podemos chegar da banda. Na verdade, eu gravei algumas músicas tipo Unity aqui na Áustria e pude ver que o Matt Enright está interessado. Melhor situação possível seria mesmo ver o Blood Days e o Unity juntos em tour. Continuarei tentando.

Muitas pessoas não sabem, mas você também teve uma carreira de top model, desfilou inclusive para  marcas famosas e até mesmo participou de videoclipe da Madonna. Conte-nos sobre este momento em sua vida.

Sim, estava no lugar certo e na hora certa, eu acho. eu estava em algum café e uma senhora se aproximou de mim e disse que seu marido era dono de uma agência de modelos e se eu estava interessado. Isso aconteceu justamente quando eu tinha decidido parar de competir no  body boarding world tour, então eu estava aberto a coisas novas. Eu fui uma semana depois conhecer seu marido e, em seguida, três semanas depois me mudei para Paris. Eu fiz isso por cerca de 6 anos, mas realmente não nos Estados Unidos, principalmente no Japão, Coréia, Taiwan, Paris, milão, Grécia, Espanha e Nova Iorque. Eu comecei a ver o mundo de graça em uma idade jovem, então é por isso que eu fiz isso. No fim de 6 anos, eu era infeliz e me perguntei quando foi a última vez que eu estava feliz? a resposta foi quando eu estava tocando e surfando. Foi entao que voltei do Japao e ai surgiu o Ignite.

Como fotografo de surf qual é a sua opinião sobre surfistas brasileiros e gostaria de saber se você conhece o país.

Eu amo a paixão dos surfistas brasileiros, eles trabalham tão duro e não parecem tão estragados como a maioria dos surfistas na Califórnia. Eu amo quando eles acenam suas bandeiras e lutao duro por um lugar ao sol. Eu encontrei o Gabriel Medina algumas vezes, cara super legal, também Pupo e sai com Jadsen Andre um dia para ... tantos talentos vindos do Brasil, e, claro, Adriano (Mineirinho), paixão paixão paixão.

Hello Joe, first and an honor to have this conversation with the guy who was part of bands that were very influential in my life.
First I would like to know why you stayed away half of the music after its passage by Killing Flame and began to devote himself more to photograph.

me and nelson always wanted to do a band so it was easy to start, i think i really could not embrace some of the anti chirstian lyrics and also still was not ready to tour. i at the same time fell in love with surf photograhy and that has been by passion ever since. two things have always stayed true to my heart and i try to do them with 100 passion and integrity. i have to committ 100 percent to one thing so now its time to write my maybe my final records and go see so many friends around the world that have always been so supportive to me. 

Looks like you with a new band now called Blood days, correct? Talk a little bit of this project and what did you get back in a band.

i never stopped playing music, i played everyday in my home. I have always wanted to do a more melodic hardcore band with my best friend from high school john low, the original unity bass player on the you are one seven inch. he is the second guitarist now for blood days and write really great parts. we have a connection like i used to have with brett from ignite and thats hard to find, so i am in a happy song writting place.

As you see the hardcore scene these days, you hear new bands? Highlight some particular?

hmmm, they all have really long names but i think thats cool, i still like the old stuff but have been listening to tempelton pek alot and think they are great. not to sure about all the tight clothes and makeup etc but seems like the new bands are better at their instuments. i still think thrice, artist and ambulance is one of the best examples and the beginning of what we are hearing today.

I always had a curiosity about and Ignite ... When the Past Our Means was released at that time the band was a major at the time and suddenly there was this separation, you and Casey Jones leaving the band and from that time the Ignite follows other way. I wonder why he had to leave the band at that time and what their vision of Ignite today and its relationship with the other band members.

casey left for personal reasons so i dont want to get into that. i left because i was so tired of playing the same songs year after year. i love writting music and sadly some other members didnt see a point in writting more songs. that comment alone made me quit. i want to play every song with passion and not like a robot on tour.

i think casey still talks to them and i talk to zoli and brett sometimes, every thing is cool with them. i even shot the nations afire band photos for brett so it all good. miss those guys and to be honest, the first 5 years with ignite were the funnest times in my life.

Ignite is completing twenty years, and is about to start a European tour. I remember you said that will be participating, as it will happen?? Other members also participate?? Casey Jones, Joe Nelson, Randy Johnson ...

ya, i guess brett had an idea to fly us all over for it, but i never heard about it till i got to austria and my friend sven told me about it. i am leaving on a train tomorrow and will be at the leipzig show and hopefully play a few songs. ignite has no idea im coming so we will see what happens. also going to see dan new band done dying in berlin. gonna be fun.

Now, Tell me a little about The Speak 714 and the Killing Flame that were fantastic bands and eque may not have the prominence it deserved. Tell me how it was playing in both bands.

the knee deep in guilt record was basically supposed to be the next ignite album but since me and dan had always wanted to do a band together and i always wanted to hear ignite type music with east coast style vocals it just worked out. for me it happened almost to soon after i quit ignite and was not ready to tour so i actually never even played a show with speak, just wrote the album. the killing flame i guess i just didnt feel a connection to it. didnt really touch my heart so there was no reason to continue. i enjoyed writing the few albums with them and playing a couple shows but my heart wasnt into it enough.

About Unity, will we ever be able to see a reunion of the band?? You accept if there was a proposal??

i have actually been talking about unity alot lately. there is no chance pat will ever sing again but the concept and message is so good i would like to maybe make a global unity band. since the second guitarist in blood days was in unit to it would be as close as you could get with two original members. i actually recorded some unity type songs here in austria and might see if matt enright is interested. best possible situation would be to have a blood days and unity tour together. im trying. 

Many people do not know, but you also had a career of supermodel parading including famous brands and even participating in the Madonna video clip. Tell us about this moment in your life.

ha, just right place right time i guess. i was at some cafe and a lady walked up to me and said her husband owned a model agency and if i was interested. this happened just when i had decided to stop competing on the body boarding world tour so i was open to new things. i went a week later to meet her husband and then three weeks later i moved to paris. i did it for about 6 years but really not in america, mostly japan, korea, taiwan, pairs, milan, greece, spain and new york. i got to see the world for free at a young age so thats why i did it. at the end of 6 years i was miserable and asked myself when was the last time i was happy. the answer was when i was playing music and surfing so i left japan early and went home and started ignite.

How, surf photographer what is your opinion on Brazilian surfers and I wonder if you know the country.

i love the passion of brazilian surfers. they work so hard and dont seem as spoiled as most of the surfers in california. i love they wave their flags and fight so hard in every heat. i got to meet gabriel medina a few times, super cool guy, also pupo and hung out with jadsen andre one day to...so much talent coming from brazil, and of course adriano, passion passion passion.
